December meeting info

Our December meeting is a private meeting with only existing members allowed. In December, the bookstore is mega busy and cannot accomodate us, so we have a special meeting in a member’s home and because it is in a member’s home, we restrict who can attend to existing members.

We will welcome new members again in January 2012 and look forward to seeing everyone! In the meantime, keep writing!

Our next regular meeting is Saturday November 12 at 6pm at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Hurst, across from NE Mall. This will be our last public meeting before the new year. Potential members who miss November can visit us again in January 2012.

Alley won’t be there, physically, for the meeting but she’s hoping to Skype her way in.

Come visit us and meet some of our members and see how we work. NTSFW never charges dues, though we accept donations to cover server fees, etc.

NTSFW meeting Oct. 8, 2011

What a fun group last night! We had several new members attend and excellent manuscript analysis as always.

Gerald said he’ll be attending this year’s World Fantasy Convention in San Diego and will participate as a panelist as well. Gerald also had some creative writing exercises for us last night that really got our creative juices flowing and our writers’ minds thinking, all from a few Ursula K. LeGuin excerpts.

Alley shared a website she discovered, Storyfix.com by Larry Brooks and a book he wrote that has helped her, Story Engineering.

Remember all, that our December meeting is a CLOSED MEETING and we will NOT MEET AT B&N. We will meet at a member’s home. Information will be given on the Yahoogroup. Guests and alcohol are welcome, but be responsible. Our January meeting will open back up with another great year to publish!

Social Media class Sat June 11

Fred will tell us all about social media for writers

At our regular monthly meeting, this Saturday, June 11, Fred Campos from Fun City Social Media will be speaking on how social media can help writers. We will meet at our regular time, 6pm, at the usual place, Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Hurst, near the NE Mall at 183 & 820. Fred will speak from 6 till about 6:45, with 15 minutes left for questions. Our regular critique session will begin at 7pm – 10pm. Then, as usual, we go across the parking lot to BJ’s Brewhouse for dinner and discussion.

Feb Meeting Sat the 12th

The next meeting is Sat. Feb 12th, at 6pm at the Hurst Barnes & Noble Bookstore. Those interested in participating in the ConDFW panel discussion will meet at 4:30pm prior.

We will not only be doing a panel discussion as NTSFW at this year’s ConDFW, we will also be sharing a party suite with the National Space Society of North Texas and R2D2!

Good work at the Nov meeting

Saturday, November 13, 8 of us met at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Hurst for our regularly monthly meeting. We had four submissions, and this was Maureen’s first time to be critiqued, congratulations, Maureen!

We gave Georgette a “Thank You” gift of various teas, crackers, chocolate, and other goodies from Taste of Europe in Arlington. Georgette is leaving the DFW area for Houston and we are sorry to see her go, but wish her all the best in her new ventures.

Tom talked more about his publications in Lava Magazine and about the journalism he’s been doing on his Triathlon competitions.

Alley talked about the class she’ll be teaching at the DFW Writers’ Conference next Feb, 2011.

After the meeting, several of us went to BJ’s restaurant across the parking lot from the bookstore.

The December meeting is not at the bookstore. Current members will get December meeting instructions via the NTSFW Yahoogroup. Future members can rejoin us in Jan 2011.

Thank you all for a great year of submissions and critiques! In Jan, we’ll award and reward those members who have submitted the most manuscripts for 2010, and more.

5pm thing

We’ve begun something new here at NTSFW. One of our members, Doc, has started a 5pm Thing where we discuss topics, conduct mini-classes, etc. using this time to benefit the members and visitors with more than just critique.

This Saturday, at 5pm, before our regular 6pm meeting, NTSFW member Alley will conduct a class called:

Examining Examiner: How to build an audience and author platform before your book is sold

In this class, we’ll explore ways authors can build an audience and platform while they are writing their novel. We’ll look at various online media outlets that can tap into the author’s passions to generate not only extra income, but build an audience and author following before his or her first (or 2nd or 3rd etc) book is even sold. By building a platform, where the author has a “canned” package deal for the agent or editor, the author is then pitching more than a novel to the agent/editor, he/she is pitching a pre-sold book by having a following online. We will also discuss blogs, interviews, social media, and other online venues to build an author’s platform.This class will last about 30 mintues with discussion after.

Alley says the reason for this class is to practice her presentation and get feedback from the audience. Alley has been invited to teach a class at next year’s DFW Writers’ Conference.

New: 5 o’clock fun

We’ve started this new thing. At 5 pm, an hour before our regularly scheduled meeting time at 6pm, we are having discussions and mini-classes.

Last month, we discussed critiquing and how we learn from doing crits.

Last night we met at the La Quinta Inn in Dallas because many of our group attended David Farland’s Professional Novel Writers’ Workshop this past week. Thanks everyone for coming out! Great crits and I learned a lot.
