NASA’s Orion Spacecraft at AAC

NASA’s Orion Spacecraft is landing at the American Airlines Center (AAC) in Dallas Jan. 27-29 at Victory Park. The capsule making a stop in Dallas was a low fidelity model that was used for fit checks prior to the launch abort test that took place in 2010.

Due to the low security restrictions on the vehicle, the public will be allowed to sign their name or write messages on some of the panels on the capsule.

NASA astronauts Nick Patrick and Clay Anderson will be available at the exhibit on the 27th and 28th respectively.

Our local chapter of the National Space Society (NSSofNT.org) will be there as well.

December meeting info

Our December meeting is a private meeting with only existing members allowed. In December, the bookstore is mega busy and cannot accomodate us, so we have a special meeting in a member’s home and because it is in a member’s home, we restrict who can attend to existing members.

We will welcome new members again in January 2012 and look forward to seeing everyone! In the meantime, keep writing!

Published in the anthology are Shawn Scarber, Lorelei Buckley, Becky Burkheart, Tricia Ferguson, Emma Aprea (Author),), Autumn Shelley (Author), William Ledbetter,Amy Oakley, and Christian P. Lambright (Illustrator).

Our next regular meeting is Saturday November 12 at 6pm at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Hurst, across from NE Mall. This will be our last public meeting before the new year. Potential members who miss November can visit us again in January 2012.

Alley won’t be there, physically, for the meeting but she’s hoping to Skype her way in.

Come visit us and meet some of our members and see how we work. NTSFW never charges dues, though we accept donations to cover server fees, etc.

Gerald Warfield’s short story “Poly Islands” won second prize in the first quarter of the 2011 Writers of the Future Contest. His humorous story “The Origin of Third Person in Paleolithic Epic Poetry” took first place this year in the nationally syndicated Grammar Girl contest. His poetry has appeared in numerous magazines including New Mythes, edited by Scott Barnes. Gerald published fifteen how-to books before turning to fiction. He is a graduate of the 2010 Odyssey Writers Workshop.

Celebrate Astronomy with the Planetarium, National Space Society, Texas Astronomical Society and the Fort Worth Astronomical Society. Throughout the day we’ll be observing the sun and sky (weather permitting), displays, demonstrations and everyone pays kid’s price to our great Planetarium shows!

NTSFW meeting Oct. 8, 2011

What a fun group last night! We had several new members attend and excellent manuscript analysis as always.

Gerald said he’ll be attending this year’s World Fantasy Convention in San Diego and will participate as a panelist as well. Gerald also had some creative writing exercises for us last night that really got our creative juices flowing and our writers’ minds thinking, all from a few Ursula K. LeGuin excerpts.

Alley shared a website she discovered, Storyfix.com by Larry Brooks and a book he wrote that has helped her, Story Engineering.

Remember all, that our December meeting is a CLOSED MEETING and we will NOT MEET AT B&N. We will meet at a member’s home. Information will be given on the Yahoogroup. Guests and alcohol are welcome, but be responsible. Our January meeting will open back up with another great year to publish!

Saturday, July 16, 2011, is the annual MOON DAY event! Held as always at the fabulous Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, Texas, from 10 am to 5 pm.

Join the National Space Society of North Texas for a day full of unique displays, interesting programs, and great family activities!

The annual MOON DAY is a celebration of space exploration, celebrating the 42nd anniversary of the first moon landing, with exhibits from not just NSSofNT, but the Dallas Mars Society, the University of North Texas, the Moon Society, UTA Planetarium, the Civil Air Patrol,the Fort Worth Astronomical Society, the UT Dallas Center for Space Sciences, Comics in Space, and more.

Speakers include Starman Ron DiIulio who is a Solar System Ambassador (SSA), Spaceminers.org, Bob Finkelman, Dr. James Carter, Ken Ruffian, Pat Hauldren, Jason Major, and many others.
